Hiérogrammates alors et aujourd’hui

Le Scribe accroupi (4e ou 5e dynastie, 2600-2350 avant J.-C., musée du Louvre) après s’être, lui aussi comme nous tous, laissé tenter par les mirages de la modernité.

«C’est le nom que les Égyptiens donnaient aux Scribes sacrés chargés de l’administration des revenus des temples. Les villes avaient des idéogrammes comme les temples. Les premiers formaient des collèges, et ils pouvaient joindre d’autres dignités à celle d’hiérogrammate. Une palette de scribe,» le kasch ou roseau taillé, un papyrus ouvert ou roulé, sont les signes auxquels on les reconnaît sur les monuments.

«C’est aux prêtres de cet ordre qu’était réservée l’administration des choses sacrées, et l’on m’excusera peut-être de dire en passant que l’habitude de poser sa plume sur le haut de l’oreille droite n’est pas une invention du génie bureaucratique moderne : il y a trois mille ans qu’on a peint dans les monuments de Thèbes des scribes de divers ordres paperassant librement de leurs deux mains au moyen de ce secours emprunté à leurs oreilles. Le schenti était leur habillement habituel, courte tunique que l’on» a réservée vraisem­bla­blement pour l’intérieur ; la calasiris, plus longue et plus ample, couvrait le schenti.

«Dans les marais d’Égypte, au bord du Nil, croit en abondance une plante aquatique, qui offre à peu près l’aspect d’un roseau. Sa tige, allongée, ronde, verte, lisse et molle porte à son extrémité un bouquet de feuillage grêle. C’est la plante qu’on nomme papyrus (voir le frontispice). Les Égyptiens coupaient la tige au pied ; enlevant l’écorce verte, ils trouvaient dessous plusieurs couches superposées d’une sorte d’écorce blanche, mince, fine, et qui se détachait facilement en feuillets déliés, semblables à des bandelettes légères, asses larges. On étalait sur une table ces bandelettes encore humides de sève ; on en couchait plusieurs les unes près des autres et se joignant, de manière à former une certaine largeur; puis sur ces bandelettes on en étendait d’autres en travers, pour réunir et maintenir les premières. Puis on les dressait, on les collait ; il en résultait une sorte de feuille mince, légère, assez large, blanche : une véritable feuille de papier enfin ; car c’est du nom de la plante, du papyrus, que nous est venu notre mot de papier. Sur cette mince et fragile matière, le scribe égyptien, l’écrivain ou le copiste, traçait ses caractères déliés à l’aide d’un pinceau, d’un mince et léger roseau semblable à une frêle tige de jonc, effilé à son extrémité. Avec son roseau, il avait pour instrument principal une palette de bois, une planchette de forme rectangulaire, dans laquelle étaient ordinairement creusés deux petites cavités rondes en forme de godets. L’un de ces godets contenait une tablette d’encre noire solide, l’autre une tablette semblable d’encre rouge : ces tablettes étaient absolument pareilles aux pastilles de couleurs de nos boites à couleurs pour l’aquarelle. Une petite fiole, de verre le plus souvent, contenant de l’eau, complétait son attirail. Le scribe trempait son pinceau dans l’eau, puis délayait un peu de couleur sur l’une ou sur l’autre des deux tablettes. D’autres» délayaient à l’avance leurs couleurs et les conservaient liquides dans de petits encriers, où ils trempaient leurs roseaux pour écrire.
