Lena Horne, une femme libre
L’article que le New York Times consacrait en novembre 1942 à Lena Horne s’ouvrait ainsi :
Lena Horne is a light brown, soft-spoken, young Negress who came to Hollywood straight from Brooklyn, the Cotton Club, Noble Sissle’s band and Café Society, Downtown. Naturally, no one out here ever heard of her.
“Here”, c’est Hollywood. Quelques mois après son arrivée en ville, elle avait réussi à percer, et l’article se termine ainsi :
Now that she’s in solid with the pictures, she lives in a five-room duplex in Beverly Hills with her four-years-old daughter and an aunt. And singing offers come in faster than she has time to refuse them. (…)
Réussite particulièrement remarquable à cette époque pour une femme noire, mariée et mère d’un enfant, de surcroît.
Près de 60 ans plus tard, ce même journal termine son obituaire en la citant :
Looking back at the age of 80, Ms. Horne said: “My identity is very clear to me now. I am a black woman. I’m free. I no longer have to be a ‘credit.’ I don’t have to be a symbol to anybody; I don’t have to be a first to anybody. I don’t have to be an imitation of a white woman that Hollywood sort of hoped I’d become. I’m me, and I’m like nobody else.”
Le New York Times n’était pourtant pas le premier journal à en avoir parlé. Six ans plus tôt, en août 1936, The Afro American, qui devait avoir le nez creux, écrivait :
Lena Horne, one of this column’s favorites, has improved more than a hundred per cent since she has been with Noble Sissle. Whether it is the guiding influence of Noble or just that she is maturing remains to be seen, but the improvement is marvelous.
Août 1936, c’est aussi la date des Jeux olympiques de Berlin : Jessie Owens, Américain et noir, y gagne des médailles d’or. La mention de Lena Horne jouxte un long article satirique que l’Afro American consacre à un Hitler et un Goering abasourdis par le fait que ce ne soient pas des Nordiques qui gagnent, et d’avoir à se lever pour écouter à chaque reprise l’hymne américain. Une phrase particulièrement sinistre qu’ils attribuent au Fuehrer indique bien qu’on savait aux US ce qui se tramait alors : “Those United States I think have pulled a fast one and imported colored to mine country. I’ll get even, that means I shoot some more Jewishers.” Stormy weather indeed.
